More and more people flock to this incredible Bavarian village each year to celebrate Christmas in old world style. Be sure to reserve your room many months in advance if you hope to have a place to stay in Leavenworth. Otherwise you may end up as far away as Wenatchee. The true magic of a Leavenworth Christmas is experienced best if you are able to find accommodations in the village.
What to Expect
When you come to Leavenworth in the winter you should make sure to bring boots, hats, and gloves because although the temperature is fairly moderate at this time of year due to an elevation of just 1200ft., it is very common to have just enough snow to make everything look fresh and beautiful.
The Christmas Lighting Festival occurs on the first three weekends in December. By Friday the town begins to swell with people, but the lights, placed by townspeople and volunteers, aren't sparkling yet. On Saturday morning the town begins to fill with the sights, scents, and sounds of the holidays. All of the restaurants, shops, and inns throughout the village are decorated in their holiday best and ready to greet you with a warm welcome (Willkommen!).
Other activities during the weekend include a Bazaar, going door to door for old fashioned caroling, music, parades, and the Leavenworth Summer Theater presents a memorable Christmas show. Whether you take part in all of the activities offered or choose to set your own pace, Leavenworth will give you a small slice of the magic of Christmas, and memories to cherish for a lifetime.
As you stroll down the street you can enjoy many old fashioned treats such as chestnuts that are freshly roasted, homemade hot chocolate, and you may be greeted by a host of Christmas figures such as St. Nicklaus, or Santa and Mrs. Claus. As you visit the quaint shops you are serenaded by live music coming from the gazebo in the center of the town. On Saturday and Sunday of each weekend the Lighting Ceremony starts at 4:30pm.
Just as dusk falls, a hush comes over the village and one by one the town's buildings, trees, and the gazebo come to life with lights in every color of the rainbow, and the villagers and visitors all come together to sing Silent Night. Appropriately dubbed "The Ultimate Holiday Town" by A&E Network, and featured by Good Morning America in 2006 and 2007, Leavenworth is the town to visit if you want to experience to true magic of the holiday season.
